Isabeau is a Samurai, a member of the military of the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado who engages in regular combat against demons and sometimes human opponents. Prior to being drafted into the Samurai order, Isabeau was raised as a noblewoman and did not have any combat experience. She has also only been a Samurai for [confused SMTIV timeline noises], with a short period of formal training and a longer, very intense period of on-the-ground combat experience.

Her primary weapon is the two-handed longsword, which she was initially trained in. She also has experience using a small variety of modern guns. I will update this section when I know enough about guns to say what kinds.

Isabeau's personal combat ability is somewhat enhanced by her summoning of demons and use of magic. More details two sections down.

tl;dr better than your average person at fighting, particularly when she has a sword in hand, capable of taking down some really frightening shit, but probably outmatched by someone who really knows what they're doing, it kind of varies based on the setting logic and whether magic exists

demon summoning

When in possession of the arm-mounted computer known as a "Gauntlet", Isabeau can summon demons that she has already negotiated into her service. Demons, in SMTIV, are entities that take their appearance, name, and rough sense of identity from mythological, fictional, and mytho-historical characters, encompassing true demons, gods, mythical creatures, urban legends, and heroes. They are powerful in battle and are generally summoned for combat purposes, but can also perform a range of other tasks according to their individual capabilities. Normally, they feed on the ambient thoughts or emotions or even the flesh of humans, with the more malicious entities having greater appetites, but demons bound by a contract to a summoner are generally tame. Demon negotiation consists of both interpersonal and material exchange; the demon must deem the summoner worthy of their service after conversation, riddles, or tests of character, then they must take a price they consider sufficient (in game mechanics, they request money, items, HP, MP, and sometimes the lives of demons already in the party).

In terms of game mechanics, summoning contracted demons has no cost in SMTIV (though it did in earlier games, depleting a resource called "magnetite"). In narrative terms, the "magnetite" of other SMT games can be safely assumed to exist in SMTIV and be both the source of MP for spellcasting (see next section) and the substance demons are consuming when they feed on humans. I interpret summoned demons as needing to have their contracts upheld through a combination of correct behavior (maintaining good relationships with the demons, holding to promises made during initial negotiation) and continued offerings (like the money, items, HP, and MP requested by demons during negotiation, but in smaller quantities and less frequently). The effort required to uphold contracts depends on the temperament of the demon. Contracts cannot be broken if not upheld, but the demon will become willful and less loyal.

In canon, Isabeau is seen summoning Jeanne D'Arc, Valkyrie, Pallas Athena, Kali, Isis, and Dakini at the end of SMTIV, with the exact party depending on the moral alignment of the player character. At earlier levels, I assume she still preferred humanoid female demons with dignified personalities, and would have a party of similar but lower-level demons. Canonpoint will determine her summoned demon roster.
